Thomas & Thomas DNA 12’9” #8- 4XF Long Term Review

Introduction: I have now owned and fished the T&T DNA 1298-4XF for 7 years, and it is still one of my favorite rods. It can handle wind, heavy flies, and different lines both in terms of length and weight. With its 12’9 feet length, it is perfect for the wider sections of the salmon rivers here in Denmark. But surely, it is also a perfect companion on bigger rivers like those in Norway and Sweden.”

Build Quality: The build quality is exceptional, as one would anticipate from a premium brand like T&T. The rod boasts a meticulously crafted aluminum down-locking reel seat, top-notch Fuji stripping guides, and all the additional refinements that discerning anglers expect in high-end rods today.

Performance: Alright, let’s discuss its performance. This rod is extra fast, so it’s not always the most forgiving, but after a while, you’ll find the rhythm, and let me tell you, it’s a true workhorse.
Casting Skagit lines with big flies against the wind is never a walk in the park, but this rod might just be the perfect tool for the job. I’ve even used it for pike fishing, casting 20cm flies across the river.

You’re never left with that feeling that your rod might be a tad too light for the task at hand.

When it comes to stopping power, it can handle the pressure, no doubt. Some years ago in Norway, I hooked a salmon on a full sinking shooting head, close to a small waterfall. I had to apply a lot of pressure to move the salmon against the strong current. After a quick fight, it ended with a beautiful salmon and a swift release. If this situation had unfolded with some of my other rods, I wouldn’t have been as confident in landing it, and I would be worried about the salmon’s ability to survive.

Price and Value: The rod is priced at $1195, so we’re not in the budget-friendly category. It does, however, align with the competition; the Sage Igniter 12’6” retails for $1295. These days, $1000 and above is the new normal for a premium spey rod. Considering the overall price range from all the major manufacturers, I would say that you won’t be disappointed if you choose to invest in the T&T DNA 1298-4XF.

Conclusion: While the DNA series may not be the latest and greatest in rod technology, infused with advanced innovations from NASA, it still performs exceptionally and reliably handles whatever challenges Mother Nature throws at you. To this day, it remains one of my favorite rods and is highly recommendable.
